In-Service Training for Teachers, Transforming teacher’s sympathy to empathy

Teachers from Labogon National High School took a week away from their own classroom to go back as “students” and learn more about their craft. Held last October 24-28, this year’s In-Service Training for Teachers covered a wide array of topics which are significant in building the capacity of each educator.

One of the discussions of this year’s INSET at Labogon National High School is on raising awareness on students with special needs. This topic is relevant to the current plight of the Department of Education to promote an education agenda that is inclusive and holistic.

According to DepEd, more than a hundred thousand students under the public school system are classified as person with disability or are enrolled in one of the agency’s special education programs. DepEd, recognizing the importance of being able to support these individuals with special needs, has launched an intensive campaign to raise awareness among its ranks regarding the importance of understanding that these disabilities are not hindrance for the children to learn and be functional members of the society.

Through various talks, the teachers of LNHS were oriented on how to address and cater to these individuals with special needs. More than showing sympathy, teachers are encouraged to show empathy -- to understand how these students can grow and help them discover their true potential.
Through the weeklong activity, teachers were introduced to various principles and practices that could be use as guides and templates in servicing special students.

Other topics discussed in the INSET include Education Laws, Delivery of Learning, Special Program in the Sports, and Life Management in Teaching and Learning. The teachers also joined a two-day seminar at Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu entitled “Enriching Students’ Diversity through Communication Arts, Teaching Methodologies and Coaching.” (Alfore)
