The Labogon National High School community held its first awarding ceremony for the participants of Bugas sa Basura, a school-based solid waste management initiative, last November 11 at the LNHS gym. Hosted by Mrs. Nova P. Avenido, a member of the LNHS faculty, the event was used as a venue to promote and inform the students regarding the Bugas sa Basura project as well as to award tokens for the active participants in the first month of its implementation.
Rodolfo Loreto of Grade 7 Mt. Olives and Renante Aparece of Grade 9 Mt. Sinai each received a kilo of rice for their active participation in the program. On the other hand, the Grade 10 Israel class, under the advisory of Mrs. Dorothy C. Seno, received 11 kilos of rice. Overall, more than 20 kilos of rice has been distributed to program participants.
Bugas sa Basura is the brainchild of Mr. Edgar Espina, school’s Prefect of Discipline, and is supported by the Araling Panlipunan Department and in full force by the LNHS faculty. Under the said program, students are encouraged to help in the segregation of school solid waste. As incentive, those who participated are given kilos of rice depending on the volume of waste they have segregated.
“Every section should have one student representative to segregate the garbage. Each sack of segregated garbage is equivalent to a kilo of rice.” said Mrs. Nina S. Tapan, AP Coordinator, as she addressed the crowd during the activity.
Mr. Marzado, the school principal, on his part is happy that his strong pronouncement regarding the importance of implementing solid waste management in the school is well-received by the faculty and students.
The event was concluded with the closing remarks delivered by Mr. Mariano Bayon-on Jr., PTA President, where he reiterated the importance of active participation among stakeholders in the success of school endeavors like Bugas sa Basura. (Cayren Sonit)
